VPN for Netflix Not Working? Here Is How to Fix It in 2026

9 June 2026

Why Netflix Blocks VPNs

Netflix uses IP address detection to identify VPN traffic. When it sees a large number of accounts connecting from the same IP address, which is common with VPN servers shared by many users, it flags that IP as a VPN exit node and blocks it. The arms race between VPN providers and Netflix is ongoing: VPN providers add new IP addresses, Netflix detects and blocks them, and the cycle repeats. The providers that stay unblocked invest heavily in IP rotation.

Fix 1: Switch to a Streaming-Optimized Server

Most premium VPNs have dedicated servers for streaming. NordVPN labels them as optimized servers and shows the Netflix library they unlock. ExpressVPN recommends specific servers for each Netflix region. If Netflix is not working, switch to one of these dedicated servers rather than a generic country server. In NordVPN: go to Specialty Servers, select Streaming. In ExpressVPN: use the recommended server at the top of the country list.

Fix 2: Try a Different Server in the Same Country

If the dedicated streaming server is blocked, try two or three different servers in the same country. VPN servers get blocked individually, not all at once. NordVPN has 50 to 100 servers in major countries. One being blocked does not mean all are blocked. Connect to a different server number in the same location.

Fix 3: Enable Obfuscation Mode

Some VPNs have obfuscation or stealth mode that disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS traffic. NordVPN calls this Obfuscated Servers, ExpressVPN uses Lightway with TCP mode, Surfshark has Camouflage Mode. These modes are slower but harder for streaming services to detect. Try enabling obfuscation if standard servers are consistently blocked.

Fix 4: Change DNS Settings

If the Netflix app blocks VPN traffic at the DNS level, changing your DNS server can help. In your VPN app settings, look for custom DNS and try setting it to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google). Some VPNs have their own Smart DNS feature specifically for streaming that bypasses VPN detection entirely while still routing your traffic through the correct country.

Fix 5: Use a Different VPN

If none of the above works and you are using a budget or free VPN, the provider may have stopped maintaining their Netflix IP pool. Switch to ExpressVPN or NordVPN, which have the largest IP rotation budgets and most consistently stay ahead of Netflix blocking. Free VPNs almost universally fail to unblock Netflix because they cannot afford the IP maintenance costs.

Browser vs App

Netflix in a browser is generally easier to unblock than the Netflix app. The app uses additional detection methods including IPv6 leak checks. If your VPN unblocks Netflix in Chrome but not in the Netflix app, check that IPv6 is disabled in your VPN settings. Most premium VPNs have an IPv6 leak protection toggle.

Which VPNs Reliably Unblock Netflix in 2026

Most reliable across regions: ExpressVPN. Best value: NordVPN. Budget option with good Netflix support: Surfshark. If your current VPN consistently fails Netflix after trying all the above fixes, one of these three is the most likely solution.
