You've installed a VPN. Now you're wondering if it's slowing you down. The question sounds simple: test before the VPN, test after, compare. But there are pitfalls. Most people run speed tests wrong, misinterpret the results, and then blame the VPN.
Why VPN Speed Matters
Gaming needs a ping under 50 milliseconds. Streaming 4K needs 25 Mbps. Torrenting wants the highest possible download speed. Your VPN will slow you down. The question is how much, and whether that slowdown matters for what you do.
How to Test Correctly
Run a speed test without the VPN connected. Use Speedtest.net or Fast.com. Run it three times and average. Now connect the VPN. Wait 10 seconds for the tunnel to stabilize. Run the same test three times. Average those results. Your VPN speed loss is the difference between baseline and VPN-connected results.
What the Numbers Mean
